    A presente dissertação toma a investigação em sistemas de interação tangível do MIT Tangible Media Group como objeto, a pretexto da sua inclusão na edição de 2016 do Festival Ars Electronica, sob o tema Radical Atoms: The Alchemists of Our Time. Pretende-se compreender quais os pontos de contato da investigação do grupo com os estudos dos media, de forma a localizar a sua relevância para a programação do festival. O enquadramento nos estudos dos media é feito pela localização de um conjunto de termos-chave no trabalho do grupo, os quais evocam questões afetas à fenomenologia, filosofia da tecnologia e mediação tecnológica. Conclui-se que estes sistemas de interação tangível ativam processos particulares de constituição de agência, significação e cognição. Na ausência de outros materiais que explorem estas relações no contexto do festival, a dissertação apresenta-se assim como complemento à leitura do tema Radical Atoms: The Alchemists of Our Time.This dissertation thesis takes the research of the MIT Tangible Media Group as its object, by occasion of its inclusion in the 2016 edition of Ars Electronica Festival under the theme Radical Atoms: The Alchemists of Our Time. The aim is to understand what are the common points between the group's research and media studies, in order to locate this object's relevance to the festival programming scope. The framing within media studies is done by surveying a set of keywords from the group's research, which evoke topics from phenomenology, philosophy of technology and technological mediation. It's concluded that these tangible interactive systems activate specific processes of agency, signification, and cognition. Given the lack of materials which explore these relationships within the context of the festival, the dissertation presents itself as a supplement to the reading of the Radical Atoms: The Alchemists of Our Time theme

    Anorexia nervosa and purgative-type bulimia nervosa: a fundamental role of the dental surgeon in diagnosis and treatment

    Introduction: In a world where appearance is considered above all by most people. It is in this unbridled search that some people end up acquiring eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa and purgative-type bulimia nervosa are diseases that are rarely taken into account in the first clinical assessment of the patient. Bulimia nervosa and Anorexia nervosa are eating disorder that causes serious physiological problems in the oral cavity, due to saliva calcification caused by frequent vomiting. Objective: it was to bring into discussion, through a literature review, the meticulous look that the dental surgeon must-have when performing the clinical examination and that he can be the first source in detecting signs of eating disorders and their clinical manifestations in the patient and so can forwards it to a multidisciplinary team for better diagnosis and treatment. Methods: This study followed an integrated literature review model and articles dating from 2001 to 2021 in English and Portuguese were selected. In virtual databases such as Scielo and PubMed. Results and Conclusion: The dental surgeon plays an important role in the team, controlling the development and progression of oral manifestations. Pass the oral hygiene guidelines, apply substances that can control the acids that are present in oral fluids; use salivary substitutes that can help reduce erosive wear. And always encourage this patient to come back for treatment. In extreme cases of damage to the dental structure, functional and anatomical, restorative or rehabilitative treatment is chosen. Recover form, function, esthetics and eliminate hypersensitivity and facilitate cleaning. The dental surgeon must be able to assess and diagnose the manifestations arising from eating disorders. Because it is the first professional to be able to detect and thus refer to a team of multi-professionals such as a psychologist, nutritionist, doctor and manage to perform the best possible treatment simultaneously and, through preventive and rehabilitative procedures, be able to return a better quality of life to the patient

    Periodontal diseases in pregnant women as a risk factor: a concise systematic review

    This study highlighted that periodontal diseases in pregnant women can be one of the determinants of low birth weight. Studies were carried out to verify the existence of an association between maternal periodontal disease and low birth weight. Gestational period, where the occurrence of periodontal diseases (PD) is more likely, due to its hormonal and physiological changes. Therefore, pregnant women must be alert and take proper care, have prenatal care with their dentist, in addition to their oral care, they must be alert to the risks of low birth weight and premature births. Infections in regions of the genitourinary tract, such as PD, may be associated with the occurrence of low birth weight newborns through the same mechanisms as other maternal and preterm birth infections. The contraction of the uterus and cervical dilation, acting as a trigger for premature birth, can be caused by inflammatory stimuli, which can induce hyperirritability of the uterine smooth muscles. The infection and the resulting inflammatory process can cause damage to the placenta, thereby restricting fetal development. Throughout life, a woman goes through several phases of hormonal fluctuations that, in addition to interfering with the reproductive system, exert influence on other organs and systems, such as the periodontium, particularly in the presence of preexisting gingival inflammation induced by plaque. During pregnancy, a woman is exposed to several significant hormonal changes, as the placenta produces high amounts of estrogen and progesterone, which in turn affect the oral tissues. It was concluded that black women aged over 40 years old are more likely to have PD, having a higher risk of low development to the fetus

    A single-phase current-source converter combined with a hybrid converter for interfacing an electric vehicle and a renewable energy source

    This paper presents a single-phase current-source converter (CSC) combined with a hybrid converter on the dc-link, allowing to interface an electric vehicle (EV) and a renewable energy source (RES). Therefore, the interface with the power grid is only performed through the CSC, which also permits the operation as shunt active power filter (SAPF), allowing to compensate power quality problems related with current and low power factor in the electrical installation. The whole system is composed by two main power stages, namely, the CSC that is responsible for compensating the current harmonics and low power factor, as well as operating as a grid-tied inverter or as an active rectifier, and the hybrid converter that is responsible for interfacing the dc-link of the CSC with the converters for the EV and the RES interfaces. As demonstrated along the paper, the CSC, combined with the hybrid converter on the dc-link, allows the operation as SAPF, as well as the operation in bidirectional mode, specifically for the EV operation, and also for injecting power from the RES. In the paper, the power electronics structure is described and the principle of operation is introduced, supported by the description of the control algorithms. The validation results show the proper operation of the CSC, combined with the hybrid converter on the dc-link, for the main conditions of operation, namely exchanging power with the power grid in bidirectional mode and operating as a SAPF.This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia with-in the Project Scope: UIDB/00319/2020.     Prevalence and clinical features of adverse food reactions in Portuguese adolescents

    Background & aims: The objective of the present study was to determine, for the first time, the prevalence and clinical features of food allergy in Portuguese adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional study performed in various secondary schools in central Portugal. Randomly selected adolescents replied to a validated food allergy questionnaire. Those who reported an adverse food reaction were seen at participating hospitals, where clinical history was taken, skin prick (SPT) and prick-prick skin (SPPT) tests were performed, and food allergen-specific IgE levels (sIgE) were determined. An open oral challenge was performed in selected cases. Cases of positive clinical history of immediate (up to 2 h after ingestion) reaction in association with positive food sIgE levels and/or SPT were classified as IgE-associated probable food allergy and as confirmed IgE-mediated food allergy if food challenges were positive. Cases of positive clinical history of delayed (more than 2 h after ingestion) and negative food sIgE levels independently of positive SPT or SPPT results, were classified as non-IgE associated probable food allergy. Results: The prevalence of probable food allergy in Portuguese adolescents was 1.41% (95% CI: 0.90–2.03%), with fresh fruits, shellfish, nuts, and peanut as the most frequently implicated foods. IgE-mediated probable food allergy occurred in 1.23% (95% CI: 0.67–1.72%) of cases, with fresh fruits, shellfish, and nuts mainly involved. Cutaneous symptoms were most frequently reported. Conclusions: The prevalence of probable food allergies in Portuguese adolescents is low, is mostly related to fresh fruits, shellfish, nuts, and peanut, and most frequently involves cutaneous symptoms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Enhanced three-phase shunt active power filter interfacing a renewable and an energy storage system

    This paper presents an enhanced three-phase shunt active power filter (SAPF) that, besides its inherent functionalities of power quality problems compensation, also allows the interface of a renewable energy source (RES, namely solar photovoltaic – PV panels) and an energy storage system (ESS, namely batteries) through its dc-link. On the power grid-side, a three-phase four-wire voltage-source ac-dc converter is connected with the power grid, operating as an SAPF, whereas the RES-interface and the ESS-interface are made through a three-port multilevel dc-dc converter connected to the dc-link of the SAPF. Besides, to compensate power quality problems related to currents, the SAPF also permits the controllability of the bidirectional power exchanged between the power grid and the dc interfaces, i.e., the RES and the ESS. The operation principle of the whole system, as well as the detailed control algorithms, are described in the paper.     Experimental analysis of niti alloy during strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue

Strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue up to 6% was monitored by in situ electrical resistivity measurements. The experimental results show that a great motion of martensite fronts results in a significant accumulation of defects, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), before and after the tensile cycles. This gives rise to an overall increase of the resistivity values up to the maximum deformation. Therefore, the research suggests that shape memory alloy wire has great potential as a stress sensor inside bulk materials.publishersversionpublishe

    Unified three-port topology integrating a renewable and an energy storage system with the grid-interface operating as active power filter

    This paper presents the experimental validation of a unified three-port topology, integrating a renewable energy source (RES) and an energy storage system (ESS) (or an electric vehicle) with the grid-interface operating as active power filter (APF). The proposed topology is based on a three-phase grid-interface (whose role is to operate as a APF grid-tied inverter capable of compensating current harmonics, imbalanced currents and low power factor), on a RES-interface for solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (whose role is to extract the maximum power from the PV panels), and on an ESS-interface for batteries (whose role is to store/inject energy according to the power management of the electrical installation). The paper presents the control algorithms for each interface within the scope of the different operation modes allowed by the unified three-port topology. Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Author(s)Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen and one of the most frequent causes for community acquired and nosocomial bacterial infections. Even so, its energy metabolism is still under explored and its respiratory enzymes have been vastly overlooked. In this work, we unveil the dihydroorotate:quinone oxidoreductase (DHOQO) from S. aureus, the first example of a DHOQO from a Gram-positive organism. This protein was shown to be a FMN containing menaquinone reducing enzyme, presenting a Michaelis-Menten behaviour towards the two substrates, which was inhibited by Brequinar, Leflunomide, Lapachol, HQNO, Atovaquone and TFFA with different degrees of effectiveness. Deletion of the DHOQO coding gene (Δdhoqo) led to lower bacterial growth rates, and effected in cell morphology and metabolism, most importantly in the pyrimidine biosynthesis, here systematized for S. aureus MW2 for the first time. This work unveils the existence of a functional DHOQO in the respiratory chain of the pathogenic bacterium S. aureus, enlarging the understanding of its energy metabolism.publishersversionpublishe
